The primary objective of the Social Science Content Specialist will be to ensure that the support provided by the Office of Teaching and Learning improves the student experience and outcomes aligned to the CPS Instructional Core Vision. Content Specialists will be assigned to grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12), with capacity for one Specialist to act as a lead for each grade level.

The Social Science Senior Content Specialist will ensure District alignment in learning and implementation of curriculum and instruction aligned to the Illinois Social Science Standards and the CPS Social Science Vision. This position will work directly with teachers and instructional leaders as an instructional coach and professional learning provider, and will work with all CPS stakeholders to advance student-led culturally responsive inquiry within their grade level. They will support the implementation and innovation in teacher readiness and continuous learning for inquiry-driven curriculum adoption that is responsive to students and their lived experiences; and create supplemental instructional resources, partnerships, and learning experiences that deepen student inquiries and are responsive to our socio-political world.

The Social Science Content Specialist will report to the Social Science Content Manager and will collaborate closely with other Social Science Content Specialists to ensure a coherent vision for PreK-12 Social Science teaching and learning is scaled throughout CPS.

The Social Science Content Specialist will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Design and facilitate professional learning for a variety of internal and external stakeholders that deepens their understanding of the CPS Instructional Core and content-specific practices to support it

Ensure  professional learning for CPS Network Chiefs/Deputies, Instructional Support Leaders (ISLs), school leaders, central office instructional leaders, external partners, and other educators successfully achieves the following:

  • Leads educators in developing, implementing, and refining network-specific professional learning plans that ensure district-wide learning is prioritized and supported within each network
  • Builds their capacity in supporting school leaders and teacher leaders with content-specific learning
  • Prepares them to lead school-based learning through coaching, team meetings, workshops, etc.

Ensure professional learning for Teacher Leaders successfully achieves the following:

  • Supports them in effectively contributing to their schools’ Instructional Leadership Teams
  • Builds their capacity to lead their colleagues in content-specific learning and reflection grounded in student learning

Design and facilitate professional learning for adopters of Skyline, the CPS universally available curriculum, including:

  • Foundational Skyline learning to support educators in understanding the philosophy, design principles, components, and systems embedded within the curriculum
  • Unit-specific launch sessions to prepare teachers to successfully implement each unit of instruction
  • Unit-specific PLC materials to engage teachers in reflection and collaborative problem solving around Skyline implementation

Contribute to the continuous improvement of Skyline through the completion of tasks such as:

  • Evaluating professional learning outcome data to inform future professional learning needs
  • Identifying, documenting, and offering solutions around barriers to successful implementation through common progress monitoring systems
  • Participating in centralized feedback structures to inform curriculum revision
  • Contribute to content-specific guidance, resources, and policy to ensure a consistent instructional vision is promoted within and across content areas
  • Collaborate with other department Content Specialists to support shared initiatives
  • Maintain content area expertise through staying abreast of current research, practices, and innovation in the field
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Social Science Content Specialist must possess the following qualifications: 

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university, required
  • Valid teaching certificate issued by the Illinois State Board of Education with appropriate grade level and content level endorsement, required. (Candidates with a valid out of state, reciprocal license will be considered but must obtain ISBE licensure within 6-months of hire.)
  • LBSI, ESL, or Bilingual Endorsement preferred
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field of study preferred

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience, including the following, is required:
  • Minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of teacher leadership experience, such as leading school teams in the development of curriculum and assessments, analyzing student performance data, etc.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working with adult learners, including creating, organizing, and facilitating professional learning experiences to meet the needs of participants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Expertise in planning, designing, facilitating, and evaluating professional learning
  • Deep knowledge of Social Science teaching and learning instructional best practices
  • Exceptional organizational skills; ability to effectively manage several work streams simultaneously
  • Capable of building and sustaining positive, productive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; comfortable collaborating and communicating across a diverse range of audiences, including network teams, principals, teachers, and support staff

  • Ability to build consensus and leverage expertise with educators across the district
  • Excellent technology skills (Google Suite)

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency – Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated or Submit to Weekly COVID-19 Testing – Employees are required to be fully vaccinated within 30 days of their hire date. Full vaccination is defined as at least two weeks after your second shot of a two-shot vaccination course, or at least two weeks after a one-shot vaccination course. Unvaccinated staff must submit to weekly testing.

Substitute Special Education Classroom Assistant at Chicago Public Schools Job Description

General Responsibilities

Assists Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools in reinforcing efforts with children with various disabilities, including physical disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, emotional impairments, and mental impairments in accordance with each students’ Individual Education Program (IEP); lifts and positions non-ambulatory students during the school day as instructed by the teacher and in adherence to written instruction from students’ personal physicians; provides one-on-one tutoring services for students to present or reinforce learning concepts; provides one-on-one personal hygiene services for students with severe disabilities, including toileting, changing soiled diapers, and cleaning soiled children regardless of age; assists students with orthopedic impairments by arranging and adjusting tools, work aids, and equipments used by students in classrooms, including but not limited to specially equipped worktables, positioning equipment, wheelchairs, tape recorders, computers, communication devices, and mechanized page turners; assists teacher in instructing students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and economic self-sufficiency; accompanies students to swimming pools and medical clinics to assist in removing clothing and performing other personal services which students are unable to perform themselves; assists in feeding students unable to do so themselves; takes notes in classrooms for students unable to do so themselves; corrects homework assignments and examination materials; assists teachers in maintaining written records of students’ behavior; accompanies students and teachers on class field trips; attends and participates in workshops and in services training to update job related skills.

Marginal Functions

May utilize aggressive management techniques to physically restrain violent students, may administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as directed by the teacher, may operate audio-visual equipment, may operate photocopying equipment.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed an Associate’s degree from a college or university accredited by the North Central Association or another regional accrediting body, or the successful completion of at least sixty (60) semester hours of college credit at a college or university accredited by the North Central Association or another regional accrediting body, including at least one course in the characteristics of mental retardation and severe/profound disabilities, or the successful completion of a state approved paraprofessional assessment, supplemented by at least one year of work experience involving the care and supervision of children with disabilities. Candidate must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) at time of employment.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

• Good knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities, good knowledge of English grammar and spelling, good knowledge of basic mathematics. • Ability to work with and for students with various disabilities, ages birth to twenty one (21) years of age; ability to follow written and oral instructions and direction; ability to complete and maintain basic written reports. Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the time of initial employment in this class title will complete CPR training as a condition of employment. • Good oral and written communication skills, skill in the operation of photocopying and audion-visual equipment is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements

MEDIUM WORK: Exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently and /or to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects. School Culture Coordinator at Chicago Public Schools Job Description

As a vital part of CPS’s overall goal of reducing violence against school-aged children in Chicago, the School Culture Coordinator will play a critical role within schools, spearheading the implementation, oversight and assessment of a holistic culture transformation. The School Culture Coordinator will work in close collaboration with key school and community stakeholders to integrate new culture programs, trainings and resources that focus on leadership and staff development, an enhanced discipline and behavior framework, student socio-emotional support, conflict resolution, and attendance improvement. Pivotal to the success of these initiatives will be a rigid performance management structure to assess the impact of the various programs against set goals. The School Culture Coordinator will also work closely with their school’s Principal, Chief Area Officer and Project Manager, and the Central Office Safety and Security team to ensure culture programs and resources are meeting expectations and that outcomes are consistently tracked. The overarching goals of the initiative will be to demonstrate a decrease in behavioral incidents, an increase in student attendance and improved academic achievement in the school by creating a safe, stable, supportive environment in which students can excel. Duties And Responsibilities LEADERSHIP Work closely with respective high school principals, the Safety and Security team, Performance Management staff, and Area Office to oversee and assess programs dedicated to creating a calm school environment Develop strong relationships with administration, teachers, staff and community to generate a collective and comprehensive commitment to the Culture of Calm initiative BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE Develop and manage a clear and consistent behavior and discipline framework, establish a clearly defined role for every adult in the school, and ensure faithful compliance and enforcement among all staff Drive conversations with staff and administration aimed at achieving grassroots support and individual ownership Generate consensus about core culture values, rules and consequences and publicize them throughout the school (Non-Negotiables) Establish and lead a culture committee comprised of teachers, administrators, and students with the goal of promoting Culture of Calm at the grassroots level Ensure every student feels a strong sense of connectedness to and advocacy from adults in the school building Establish school-wide ownership of each student having a “go to” adult in the building Align behavior and discipline programs with the school’s culture values and ensure they have a restorative approach. Sustainable Community Schools Coordinator at Chicago Public Schools Job Description

The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child — in every school and in every neighborhood — has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. The Sustainable Community Schools (SCS) Coordinator is responsible for implementing the Sustainable Community Schools Initiative in a cohort of schools. The SCS Initiative is a joint partnership between CPS and the Chicago Teachers Union. The SCS Coordinator reports to the Sustainable Community School Manager in the Office of College and Career Success who will ensure the Coordinator’s work is aligned to and supports a shared leadership model with the Chicago Teachers Union. Principal Accountabilities

  • Train schools on needs assessment and asset mapping process, and assist with the annual process
  • Assist schools with SCS service plan process
  • Facilitate procurement and accounts payable processes
  • Conduct program observations using the Youth Program Quality Assessment tool and provide feedback reports
  • Support the research and evaluation of the SCS model
  • Connect school based SCS Coordinators and community partners with CPS internal department resources that can support the needs of the school
  • Facilitate a cooperative working relationship between the school based SCS Coordinator, community partners, school staff (including CTU delegate) and leadership team in order to organize high quality implementation aligned to the principles of the SCS Initiative
  • Support school based SCS Coordinators to be able to assess relationships with community members and partners in order to identify opportunities to strengthen collaborative work and leverage engagement of new partners
  • Provide ongoing support for school site level SCS Leadership Committee
  • Facilitate coordination and sharing of strategies between schools in the cohort aligned to the initiative principles
  • Facilitate development of professional development plans at schools aligned to initiative principles
  • Assist CSI staff with other responsibilities related to office operations and other duties as assigned

  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated project management experience.
