Reporter at Harvard University Job Description

The health and science reporter will cover the world-renowned medical, research and biotech communities of Greater Boston. Reporting will include groundbreaking biomedical labs, new and emerging health science and health trends, personal health and mental health. The health and science reporter will also be responsible for hosting WBUR’s CommonHealth newsletter, developing a unique voice and relationship with readers. The reporter should have a passion for multimedia storytelling and a demonstrated ability to report from the perspective of patients and their families, researchers and medical providers. The position requires that you develop subject-matter expertise, break news and cultivate strong sources. The reporter is responsible for identifying important trends in health care, determining the quality and news value of research, and collecting and verifying information. Candidates should have proven experience building audience and stoking community engagement.

Essential Functions

  • Reports and produces several audio and digital feature stories each month, in addition to spots and short posts, focusing on biomedical research, health and health care. Independently judges news stories for appropriateness and publication. Breaks news. Completely executes multimedia stories.
  • Writes about the latest health and science news for the weekly CommonHealth newsletter and curates coverage in an informal, conversational style.
  • Consistently and enthusiastically engages with readers and the WBUR community on social media and community venues such as public forums and events. Manages the CommonHealth social media accounts.
  • Develops and pitches ideas for stories, initiatives and projects related to health and science coverage. Provides ongoing insight to other WBUR reporters, shows and departments about health and science coverage.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments in health and biomedical research, develops sources and tracks trends in the region.

Required Skills

Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience required.

After a century of publication, Arnoldia , the quarterly magazine of the Arnold Arboretum , has become the definitive forum for conversations about the nature of trees and other woody plants, as well as the landscapes they occupy. Importantly, Arnoldia also reports on the history of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and other botanical gardens, and the growth, development, and study of their archival, preserved, and living collections. It is the core publication of the Arnold Arboretum and plays a central role in disseminating knowledge to specialist and lay audiences alike. In 2022 (the Arboretum’s sesquicentennial year), Arnoldia will relaunch with a redesigned format that will engage new audiences and expand its impact.

The Editor plays a key role in maintaining the magazine’s reputation as a scholarly publication and respected research resource. Working with the Keeper of the Living Collections and the Editorial Committee, the Editor has primary responsibility for managing the people and the processes required to deliver a high-quality publication.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

The Editor manages all phases of print and digital production to ensure the timely and consistent publication and delivery of four (4) quarterly issues of Arnoldia per year. To accomplish this, the Editor develops and implements strategic planning and sets publication priorities. To do this, they liaise with the Arnoldia Editorial Committee and other stakeholders to create and sustain a vision commensurate with the publication’s, and the Arboretum’s, singular legacy and future. They solicit and evaluate all manuscripts and proposals (including artwork) to build a robust content inventory. The Editor reviews all submitted articles, which includes the coordination of external review when necessary, and conducts/coordinates all proofing and copyediting. They are in charge of establishing Arnoldia’s style guidelines and ensuring these and other aspects of brand identity are maintained. They oversee all layout and design and manage the vendor(s) responsible for printing and mailing. Administratively, the Editor supervises the graphic designer, copyeditor, and occasional interns. They also maintain the magazine’s digital presence, oversee circulation, and manage a budget to accomplish all of the above.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:

  • Bachelors’ degree required.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience editing, writing, and/or publishing preferably with science and research publications.
  • Facility with and knowledge of literature in the plant sciences (particularly horticulture).
  • Must be fluent in all Microsoft Office programs.

Additional Qualifications And Skills

Graduate degree preferred. A background in science and experience in horticulture, botany, and/or public gardens are strongly preferred. An understanding of the context in which Arnoldia fits, particularly its role within the collected literature, and across the history of plant science. Must be comfortable with the use of the Web as a research, and publication, tool. Familiarity with graphics software (InDesign, Photoshop, Quark) desirable.
