Metro Transithas its own licensed police force committed to the safety of its customers and employees, serving eight counties and 85 cities in the region. There are approximately 141 full-time officers, 60 part-time officers, 20 community service officers and 12 administrative staff dedicated to one thing: public safety on and near our transit system.

As a Metro Transit Police Officer, you will protect and serve Metro Transit employees, passengers, equipment and property. Transit Police Officers ride buses and trains as well as patrol along bus routes, METRO Blue Line (Hiawatha), METRO Green Line (Central Corridor), and the Northstar Line. Transit Police Officers also inspect fares on the Blue Line, Green Line and Northstar trains and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes.

Application review will begin on May 4th, 2021. We anticipate utilizing this recruitment process to fill a late summer 2021 academy session, as well as create a one-year eligibility list for future vacancies. Applicants must be eligible to be POST licensed by the time of conditional offer.

  • Protect employees and passengers, safeguard property and equipment of Metro Transit across all municipalities and counties served by Metro Transit
  • Patrol assigned areas in a squad car, on foot or onboard public transit and performs visual inspections

  • Demonstrate knowledge of geographic locations in assigned areas

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
  • An associate degree in Law Enforcement from an accredited College or University AND must currently be MN Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) licensed or eligible to be POST licensed as a full-time peace officer in the State of Minnesota by the time of conditional offer.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Salary – based on 2020 rates (2021 labor contract in negotiation):
Start – $27.32 hourly / $56,825 annual
After year 1 – $30.08 hourly / $62,566 annual
After year 2 – $33.70 hourly / $70,096 annual
After year 3 – $36.47 hourly / $75,857 annual
After year 4 – $38.91 hourly / $80,933 annual

Lateral Officers: Hourly rate will be based on years of sworn full-time experience upon completion of the academy.

The position may require work around moderate/extreme noise, moderate/extreme weather conditions, mechanical parts, electric currents and vibration; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases and poor ventilation; hazardous materials such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, printer, telephone, copy/fax machine, squad car, bicycle, bus, train, mobile computer, other mobile devices, camera, handcuffs, first aid kit, handgun, rifle, chemical irritant, electronic devices, and baton.

This position requires standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, taste or smell. Requires close distance color, peripheral vision with the ability to adjust focus.
