Research Assistant Professor at University of North Carolina Job Description

The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 39 Tenured-Tenure Track /10 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 2 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 120 Adjuncts, 17 EHRA Non-Faculty, 20 Postdocs, 37 SHRA (Staff), 28 SHRA Temporary and 181 students enrolled- 162 PhD and 19 MSCR. The department’s operating budget is 27 million a year.

Position Summary

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC invites applications for a research track faculty position at the level of Research Assistant Professor. The successful candidate is expected to support multiple research projects focused on mental health interventions in Malawi, with a particular focus on guiding mixed (qualitative and quantitative) methods research and addressing research questions related to the relationship of stigma to mental health treatment and outcomes. The faculty member in this position will be involved in developing and guiding mixed methods data collection, lead and contribute to analyses and manuscripts based on qualitative and quantitative data, collaborate in the development of new research proposals, and be encouraged to develop an independently funded research program in this area.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

PhD in Epidemiology or a related field

Expertise in mental health research in low- or middle-income countries as demonstrated in publication record; expertise in designing qualitative data collection and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; strong track record of first- and co-authored publications

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Postdoctoral training in Epidemiology or related field desirable

6 months of field research experience in sub-Saharan Africa; Evidence of productive collaborative working relationships with colleagues from low- or middle-income countries; Record of funded research in sub-Saharan Africa; ability to spend 6 months per year in Malawi in the first 12 months of the position; expertise in stigma research as demonstrated in publication record

Sponsored Projects Accountant at University of North Carolina Job Description

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) partners with the research community to support and advance the University’s research mission by providing leadership and expertise in research administration. OSR facilitates and manages all aspects of sponsored research administration for over $1B in sponsored awards each year while developing and maintaining strong relationships with campus partners and external sponsors. OSR is responsible for the following primary functions: (1) proposal review and submission, (2) award negotiation, (3) award management, (4) financial reporting and cash management, (5) F&A rate development, negotiation, and review, (6) cost analysis and research service center (recharge) rate development, (7) monitoring and oversight of time and effort reporting, (8) oversight of regulatory compliance, (9) training and development for research administration personnel, and (10) Project closeout and final reporting requirements. OSR provides complete sponsored project life cycle support (sometimes known as pre-award and post-award services) to faculty and staff.

There are four functional areas of responsibility within the Office of Sponsored Research, which have the following types of positions: (1) program administration; (2) accounting, financial reporting, and cash management; (3) data management reporting and analysis; and (4) financial compliance, effort reporting, cost studies, and cost accounting standards (CAS).

OSR serves as the official institutional signatory for the Chancellor and is responsible for reviewing and authorizing proposal submissions, as well as negotiating and administering awards on behalf of the University. These activities include monitoring institutional compliance for research and training activities, pre-award services, billing and financial reporting, cash management, cost analysis and compliance of research-related activities, verification of technical report and patent & invention report submissions by principal investigators (PIs), award closeout, and the implementation of information technology into research administration activities. OSR’s centralized administrative functions facilitate the development and implementation of standardized policies & procedures across the University. They also provide training opportunities to improve University-wide efficiencies and communication to increase the quality of research administration.
Position Summary
The Sponsored Projects Accountant will be responsible for timely and accurate preparation and examination of a variety of financial reports or invoicing for submission to external sponsors that provide funding via contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements. These submissions must be in accordance with the terms and conditions of each award. This position will also assist managers with closeout of projects, prepare and submit journal entries and other forms to post financial data, and provide assistance to University personnel and to sponsoring agencies.

Position Summary

Duties will include:

* Overseeing the billing of the University’s sponsored funds.
* Submitting accurate, complete reports & invoices in an efficient, timely manner to various agencies and organizations.
* Understanding, interpreting, and applying rules, regulations, and procedures applicable to the processing of financial data, maintenance of financial records, preparation of fiscal reports, and management of funds.
* Interpreting UNC and sponsor regulations and guidelines for fiscal award management and partnering with departments to manage their sponsored funding.
* Maintaining current working knowledge of federal regulations, sponsor policies, and UNC policies.

The selected candidate for this position must have very strong analytical abilities due to the complexity of financial reports and invoices that will be assigned to this position. Anything less than 100% accuracy has the potential to negatively impact future funding, expose the institution to financial risk, and adversely affect UNC’s prestigious reputation. Errors resulting in failure to exercise required accuracy would have a grave financial impact and ultimately would erode the credibility of the Office of Sponsored Research as well as cause irreparable harm to the University.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in accounting; or Associate’s degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

The selected candidate must demonstrate the following:

* Ability to organize and analyze data with attention to detail under pressured deadlines.
* Ability to use advanced techniques in Excel spreadsheets.
* Knowledge of computerized accounting systems and applications, including general ledger, report writing applications, and general software applications.
* Experience interpreting, analyzing, and identifying spending patterns, formatting special financial reports, and communicating budgetary information using complex data, rules, regulations, and resource materials.
* Excellent mathematical skills, including the ability to perform complex calculations and to prepare, develop and analyze expenditure reports, data projections, and billings for consistency, allocability, and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

* Experience in a university sponsored programs or grant accounting office, post-award administrative setting.
* In-depth knowledge of federal and non-federal agency requirements and regulations for sponsored research.
* Extensive knowledge of university policies and procedures regulating the administration of sponsored projects.
* Knowledge of Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Uniformed Guidance Circular 200 and A-133 and federal funding agency award administration policies.
* Experience with PeopleSoft or similar financial system.
* Ability to use database, web authoring, and/or presentation software.
* Ability to research, identify, and implement software applications to increase productivity (such as AutoHotkey).
* Certified Research Administrator credentials.

Position Description The analyst position is part of the Prospect Management, Research and Analytics ( PMRA ) department, which is comprised of four separate, collaborative offices – prospect management, pipeline development, principal gifts research and analysis, and prospect analytics – each of which oversees its own catalog of services and products to support the university-wide development community (commonly referred to as OneCarolina). The department’s twin goals are to validate relevant prospects and facilitate the movement of prospects through the pipeline. PMRA is known as a prospect development shop and reflects many of the same interests as its professional association, Apra, which brings together those “who strategically harness information and data to drive fundraising for philanthropic institutions.” PMRA’s core competencies are working with information, building relationships and delivering effective solutions. An analyst applies advanced analytical skills and critical thinking to strategic business opportunities associated with the University’s fundraising enterprise. This position consults with clients from the University Development Office and more than 25 schools and units to frame business questions and then apply a variety of analytical tools and datasets to provide answers that drive fundraising productivity. This position provides strategic services to fundraisers at all stages of the development cycle, including but not limited to – identification of new prospects, optimization of fundraiser prospect portfolios and assessment of fundraising program productivity. Minimum Education And Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Essential Skills, Knowledge And Abilities Demonstrated experience with (or aptitude for) database, spreadsheet, query, statistical, data analysis, data management, and visualization tools Preferred Qualifications Experience in a complex fundraising organization situated within the higher education and academic medicine sector preferred. Familiarity with UNC -Chapel Hill. Familiarity with Blackbaud CRM . Knowledge of prospect development principles, practices and tools of the trade preferred. Strategic and analytical thinker. Excellent organizational skills; interpersonal, consulting and project management skills; attention to detail and accuracy; creativity and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse constituencies, meet deadlines, be self-motivated, work independently, show flexibility and adaptability to shifting priorities.
