Summary

The incumbent performs duties primarily in mechanical engineering on projects involving new construction and maintenance or modification of existing facilities in the areas of lock structures, operating equipment, buildings, utilities and navigational aids and equipment. Duties

As a General Engineer, you will:

  • Perform duties primarily in the mechanical engineering disciplines on projects involving new construction and maintenance or modification of existing facilities and equipment.
  • Perform preliminary site investigations to determine feasibility of projects, define problem areas, and obtain data for project designs and specifications.
  • Prepare Scopes of Work, evaluate proposals, and serve as Contracting Officers Technical Representative for contracts and for studies and designs performed by architectural/engineering firms.
  • Work with Maintenance Division Chief and Branch Chiefs to gather information for projects to be included in future capital improvement and maintenance operating budgets.
  • Serves as technical expert and troubleshooter in various areas including but not limited to inspecting and assessing the condition/serviceability of systems and structures.
  • Prepare preliminary and final sketches and drawings for engineering projects using AutoCAD computer program.

The ideal candidate for this position will have demonstrated their ability to identify problems and develop alternative plans, while meeting fiscal and time constraints and clearly communicating with and balancing the interests of all stakeholders.

  • Troubleshooting and proposing corrective actions as situations arise under various field conditions;
  • Providing technical oversight of complex mechanical and basic civil/structural system designs for compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and specifications;
  • Performing a full range of engineering designs for mechanical systems, including site investigations, feasibility studies, preliminary and final designs, specifications, and cost estimates. Designs created must also consider aspects of other engineering fields such as civil/structural or electrical; and
  • Preparing preliminary and final sketches and drawings for engineering projects by using AutoCAD software.

MANDATORY EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

(1) All applicants must meet the education requirements under A or B to qualify for applying to an engineering position.

Successful completion of a degree in engineering that: (1) has at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) that included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced that first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:  (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials; (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials; and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics; OR

B. Combination of education or training: college level education, training and/or technical experience that has furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
1. Professional registration or licensure – current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE).
2. Written Test – Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
3. Specified academic courses – Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences which included the courses as specified in Paragraph A above.
4. Related curriculum – Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree in engineering, provided the applicant had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. There should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering type experience. Salary Information:  The salary range listed above includes locality pay of 16.20%.  The current starting hourly rate for this position is $16.90.

Sign-on Bonus: The Transportation Security Administration is offering a sign-on bonus of up to $1,000.00 for this location. $500.00 after onboarding and an additional $500.00 after one year of service. This initiative applies to TSO new hires that who onboard prior to September 30, 2022.

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) provide security and protection of air travelers, airports and aircraft in a courteous and professional manner.  This includes:

  • Operating various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers, and preventing those objects from being transported onto aircraft.
  • Performing searches and screening, which may include physical interaction with passengers (e.g., pat-downs, search of property, etc.), conducting bag searches and lifting/carrying bags, bins, and property weighing up to 50lbs.

TSO Dress and Appearance Responsibilities: TSOs are required to adhere to the Personal Appearance Standard that requires a neat, clean and professional appearance while on duty or while wearing a uniform. This includes adherence to policies on accessories and grooming. For example, with the exception of 1/4 inch stud-type earrings, body and/or tongue piercing may not be visible to the public. In addition, tattoos of any kind on the head, face, and exposed areas of the neck must be covered at all times and not visible to the general public. TSA issued and approved items such as turtlenecks or dickies may be used to cover tattoos on the lower neck.

Work Schedules for Part-time Positions: Specific work shifts and schedules will be determined by the airport.

  • Part-time shifts generally range from 16-32 hours per week
  • Part-time work consists of shift-work on any day from Sunday through Saturday, which may include irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended shifts and weekend shifts, changing shifts, and split shifts
  • A “split-shift” consists of any two work shifts, each lasting at least two (2) hours in one 24-hour period, with at least two (2) hours between work shifts

Maintaining Employment: All TSOs must maintain the standard level of certification and fitness for duty, to include:

  • Completing classroom training, on-the-job training, and all initial certification testing
  • Recurrent and specialized training and recertification tests on a periodic basis

This position is assigned to the Office of Financial Management & Administration, Procurement & Supply Division, Massena, NY. You will perform warehousing operations and database maintenance in support of the supply operations. Responsibilities

The Materials Handler:

  • Performs extensive warehousing operations and database maintenance in support of the supply operations.
  • Coordinates incoming shipments and distribution of items and placement of materials within docking area.
  • Opens, inspects, counts, marks, unpacks, segregates and/or tags items.
  • Identifies, examines, classifies, accepts, and disposes of a wide variety of materials and property including electronic equipment, ship, mechanical, electrical, and motorized components, and assemblies.
  • Checks stock numbers and part numbers in supply catalogs to adequately identify property.
  • Identifies or routes items to maintenance activity for technical inspections when defects, excessive wear, corrosion, missing parts, or damage is discovered.
  • Assists laying out storage space, establishing item locations, determining organization and arrangement of stock, identifying high and low usage items.

The ideal candidate for this position has experience in warehouse operations, inventory, and date maintenance in a computerized system.

    • WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed inside and outside in in close quarters in storage areas or bin aisles, ramps, or on platforms that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. Warehouse and storage areas may be hot in summer and cold in winter. May be subject to inclement weather when working outside checking, loading, or unloading material on/off trucks. Subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, scrapes, and broken bones in moving or handling material, from shifting loads, toppling stacks, forklift overturning or accidents with other moving equipment. Some exposure to hazardous materials may occur during shipping or storing of such materials Must wear proper personal protective equipment as required.
    • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Stands on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Bends, stoops, and works in tiring and sometime uncomfortable positions. Climbs ladders to pull stock, stock shelves and bins. Uses sharp instrument to break open boxes. Lifts and carries objects up to SO lbs. independently and objects over SO lbs. with assistance. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods at a time.
    • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
